  • Experience

    Sugarloaf is the container for all my IT related activities, focused mainly on web development and desktop application programming.

    I have developed many websites for clients over the years, adopting table-less design using CSS since 2005. As web technologies have matured, I have incorporated various elements such as AJAX into user interactions where appropriate.

    Development of simple one-page sites to complex membership and order management services have been done, many with mobile services integration such as SMS. Recently I have also project managed the technical implementation of an SMS campaign in India for Ninjani on behalf of the World Aids Council, from finding the right mobile partner, negotiating the terms of the deal (gaining a big discount for the NGO), and setting up the short-code message processing and response handling, all managed on a global basis using Skype, MSN and email.

  • Why Sugarloaf?

    It is a reminder of my days as a student, when I was traveling in the USA on a work exchange programme. I met some people one night in Boston, and they invited me to join them on a trip to a ski resort in Maine, some 8 hours drive away.

    On an impulse I immediately said yes, and had the most fabulous weekend. The event stuck in my mind as a reminder to embrace and celebrate the random chance meetings we have, whether it be the person sitting next to us on the plane, having coffee at the table next to yours or in the queue together. So say hello, and let your universe of possibilities expand.

    Oh, the name of that ski resort was Sugarloaf USA :)

    Hello, I'm Simon de Haast. I am based in Cape Town, South Africa.

    Sugarloaf is the container for all my IT related activities, focused mainly on web development and desktop application programming.

    I have two other activities that help create my portfolio life:
    - my innovation coaching business called ideafarm, and
    - a live music and band photography brand called pixels that rock.

    Professional photographers need a website that showcase their work in the simplest way possible, and not let any unnecessary elements detract from their images. Simple web design helps, but more importantly, it needs to be really easy to update and manage the image library at the backend. I achieved this with by harnessing the very powerful Flickr online photo service to act as an image database, but presenting it in a way that is invisible to the user using the Flickr API and other web components for a highly price effective photo portfolio by using existing components.
